A Brighton author’s own search for identity has inspired her to write a book about love and family.

Kate Murdoch is also an accomplished painter who has a remarkable life story.

Murdoch was born 10 weeks premature in the early 1970s at Queen Victoria Hospital in Melbourne. After three months she was adopted, after her young single mother was unable to care for her.

That tumultuous start inspired her debut book, the historical fiction Stone Circle, which is set in the Renaissance period.

“As the book reflects, I’ve always identified strongly with European sentiments and I think this is why I have become so preoccupied with European settings in my novels,” she said.

She said the characters and themes reflected her own life, exploring class, rivalry, spiritual growth and identity.

Stone Circle was launched at Page 8 in Hampton this month. it’s available there, and online at Amazon, Booktopia and Kobo. RRP: $22.95.
