Rising basketballer wins Sports Star

Riley Simmons is the Cranbourne Leader’s Junior Sports Star 2019 winner.

A Cranbourne rising basketballer has been named this year’s Cranbourne Leader Local Sports Star.

Riley Simmons, 16, who attends Cranbourne Secondary College, said he was thrilled to have taken the Junior Sports Star title at the awards ceremony last week, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s Members Club. “It feels really good to win, I really want to thank my mum and dad. They’re really good to me and pay so much money driving me over 20 hours a week to training,” he said.

Simmons had played in the Australian Junior Championships and School Sport Australia National Championships this year, with his team winning both tournaments. He said the toughest challenges he had faced was coming back from double-digit deficits in two gold medal matches.

The Senior Sports Star award was won by Laetisha Scanlan for shooting.

This year’s Sports Star program had nominations for more than 66 different sports.

Over the years the honour roll has included some of the nation’s biggest sporting names including Lauren Burns, Shane Warne and Matt Welsh.
