Southern United juniors hit the pitch running


Southern United’s Under 10 girls hockey team.

THE weekend brought the first round of hockey for juniors for 2017 with 17 teams from Southern United taking the field in Hockey Victoria competitions.

With many players coming through the Hookin2hockey program, the younger teams were full of bright new faces and uniforms.

The Under 10 girls team played a strong game, coming away with nine goals against Mentone. Holly Pinckard, in her first game of hockey, scoring a hat-trick.

The Under 10 boys were all playing their first game of half field hockey and also played with gusto.

Charlie Gow scored two goals.

At the other end of the age scale, the Under 18 mixed team, coached by long-time player and coach Steven Duffield, had a 3-1 win against Knox.

The Under 16 mixed A grade team was at home against country team Gippsland Bulls.

Gippy, new to A grade, struggled against the Southern team with Under 15 boys Victorian captain Craig Marais scoring six goals and Carlin Walker five.

Under 15 girls Victorian co-captain Emily Hamilton Smith ensured a strong defence in the 18-0 win.

The Under 14 A grade girls team travelled to Camberwell on Friday night and had a fine 7-1 victory.

The Under 12 girls were playing with a spring in the step. Puck Okhuizen and Lulu Stansby had been selected in the Under 12 School Sports Victoria team to play in Adelaide in December, while Taylor Nel was selected as emergency.

Puck celebrated her selection with a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw.
