Sharks girls unbeaten in state tournament

IT was a quieter weekend for hockey, with no Premier league or junior games.

But the under-age players had a busy week with the Junior State Championships.

The ten regions of hockey competed over four days to determine champions at Under 13, 15 and 17 level.

The Under 13s were not only playing to win the championship, many were vying for selection in the Under 13 Victorian team to be picked in the next few weeks.

The Under 13 Southern Metro Sharks girls had a dream tournament, with a dream team (10 of the 16 players had previously been selected to represent Victoria).

The Sharks region extends from Brighton to Frankston and across to Casey.

The local district was heavily represented with Southern United coach Julian Pratt and nine girls from Southern United — Dominique Blatherwick, Shayla Jansz, Josie Lawton, Laura Loycke, Taylor Nel, Puck Okhuizen, Hope Pengilly, Evie Stansby and Lulu Stansby — and three from Mentone Hockey Club

— Jayde Temby, Zara Geddis and Sierra Lee.

The team finished the tournament with no losses and being crowned state champions.

Southern Metro Sharks last won the Under 13 Junior Girls State Championships in 2012 with a group of girls that continued to successfully represent the zone and state, winning the Under 15 girls state championships in 2014 and the Under 17 crown in 2015.
