Southern has big day at home

It promised to be a huge day of hockey at the home of Southern United, Kingston Heath Reserve, on Saturday.

And it didn’t disappoint.

Four key games between Southern and Waverley made for a great day.

It started strongly with the Premier League reserve men’s game between Southern, fourth, and Waverley, sixth. The expectation was for a tight game but, once Southern gained an advantage, it came tumbling down for Waverley and Southern won 5-1.

The top-of-the-table men’s Premier League game between Southern and Waverley was explosive and, while Southern seemed to have the upper hand, the Spanish goalkeeper for Waverley kept the ball out.

A penalty corner gave Waverley a 1-0 win and the two teams now share the same number of points on the ladder.

The Southern women had a disappointing draw last week and were keen to atone.

A goal in the first quarter to Rachael Guy was enough to give Southern the win.

The last game of the day saw Southern win the women’s Premier League reserves clash 3-2 with Ash Jones scoring two goals.
