State reps galore

THERE is no “off-season’’ for Southern United players.

Indoor hockey fever has a hold of juniors with 180 players taking up the indoor version of the game over summer.

The trials for the Victorian indoor teams have concluded with Southern well represented.

Ashleigh Jones was selected in the Under 21 women’s team, Emily Hamilton Smith and Jamie Zimmerman in the Under 18s, Evie Stansby and Dominique Blatherwick in the Under 15s, and Puck Okhuizen and Lulu Stansby in the Under 13 girls Victorian team.

In the boys Dominic Eddy was chosen in the Under 15 Victoria team.

It’s the first state selection for Dominic and Ashleigh.

All players will travel to Goulburn for the Australian championships in January.

The club championships for the Under 13 indoor teams in Victoria were held on the weekend with the Southern United teams performing well. The girls were unlucky in their pool draw, and with only one loss for the tournament finished fifth. The girls team was coached by two of the club’s recent junior graduates, Emily Hamilton Smith and Olivia Carruthers. The boys also finished fifth in the tournament.

On Sunday, Southern United’s pitch at Farm Rd, Cheltenaham was busy with the annual grand masters tournament, open to older players around Victoria.

It’s a great chance for players to catch up with old friends while showing they continue to have prowess on the pitch and age certainly does not remove the competitiveness. Eight teams fought out for the title. After nine games the tournament was won by team KAOS with the team Get Smart runners up. Southern United treasurer Deb Ghuliani scored the three winning goals.
