Bike help wheeled out

PEDDLE power is making inroads for some of the most isolated people in Darebin.

And with the help of a $2000 community grant from Darebin Council it will be wheeled out even further.

WeCycle, established in 2015, collects and repairs second-hand bikes to provide vulnerable people, such as refugees, with much-needed transport. The volunteer group will use the money to buy helmets, locks and lights.

Volunteer Steve Edmonstone said the bikes helped those who couldn’t afford to commute get to work and school and supported social inclusion. Last year, WeCycle donated 80 bikes to organisations such as the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Mind Australia, Women’s Refuge and Foundation House. The WeCycle bike shed, at Batman Park in Northcote, is open on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm.
