Take a break from chocolate and hot cross buns and try the delicious treats enjoyed by the Polish at Easter time.

Avid baker Magda Grkow is bringing the tastes and Easter festivities of Poland to markets in Melbourne’s east.

And the baked goods are the perfect treat if you’re not the biggest chocolate fan.

The Polish goods are all about butter, with many also featuring honey, nuts and fruit. “There’s not so much sugar to be honest,” she said. “We just love butter.”

Ms Grkow has been busily making Mazurek cakes to sell— a popular festive Polish Easter dessert. Her king mazurek cake is made with butter, flour, egg yolks and almonds, and is covered in jam and icing.

She said her babka cakes and baked cheesecake were also Polish Easter favourites.

And she’s created her own Easter shortbread cookies for kids, which are made using lemons from her garden, and cut into rabbit and chick shapes.

Ms Grkow bakes all her delicious treats at her Wantirna South home and has been selling them at markets in the eastern suburbs for four years.

She said her business Polish Treats was becoming more and more popular, with customers regularly placing orders.

She sells her goodies all year round, with the variety changing with the season. She said her honey cake, layered with cream and covered in walnuts, was one of the most popular. She uses her own recipes, and uniquely stuffs her poppy seed strudel with almonds, honey and raisins inside the poppy seed cream.

She also has treats for chocolate lovers, such as chocolate and cinnamon meringues and vanilla and dark chocolate cakes filled with fresh raspberries.

The former dentist said she decided to make her hobby her career when she moved to Australia. She learnt to bake when she was eight years old and taught by her elderly Polish neighbours.

Ms Grkow will next be selling at the Surrey Hills Treasures & Tastes @ Trinity market on Saturday, April 20 from 9am to 1pm.
